When I started my online business adventure, I did everything right at first to get targeted traffic and build my responsive list. The only problem was that I didn’t know it.

In 2004, I decided to write a book about parenting. I thought it would be THE best book that everyone would need to read to improve their relationship with their kids. This would be a blockbuster I was sure.
Before I had begun really, and unknowingly, I had stumbled on a little list building tactic that worked like crazy.
As I was thinking about who would help me build the ebook, I thought…
First, I asked, "Where are these people hanging out? And how do I get in front of them?"
Most writers don’t think of marketing and business tactics first, but the most successful ones do. That’s why writing magazines often focus on agents, markets, pay scale and publishing contracts.
In fact, I’d been subscribing and reading Writers' Digest magazine for more than 20 years myself. So, I knew exactly the kind of articles that recur yearly. And I also knew that most writers were not successful because they didn’t understand business.
But that’s where they were hanging out in the pages of Writer’s Digest.
Getting in front of them was easy. I checked out their advertising section and realized I could buy a display ad for their digital version for $600 for a couple of weekends.
Armed with my trusty AMEX card, I paid for the it and wrote a couple of lines for the ad that went something like this:
“If you’ve ever wanted to build a business online to support your book, follow me for the next 90 days as I write the book and build my online business from scratch - for FREE!”
The day before the ad came out, I had a list of ZERO. Two days later, 650 people were on my list, anxious to watch me write a book and build a business around it.
This was my million-dollar ticket to financial freedom because EVERYONE would want my book - it was that good.
My poor little ego quickly was crushed when no one showed up to buy. Oprah didn’t call to tell me that I was the next BIG Thing and she’d like to do a spin-off show like she did with Dr. Phil.
In fact, there was deafening silence.
No one showed up because I drove no traffic.
Zero.
Traffic, it turns out, is the key component to getting your product offer in front of the right people who will buy your offer because it solves their problem.
Without consistent, targeted traffic, my business was just an expensive and time-consuming hobby.
