My idea about list building was that if a little was good; a lot was better.
So, my landing pages and lead magnets had too much content on them. Too much content, too many tools, too much value, and too overwhelming.
The Problem: They didn’t convert very well because people were overwhelmed by the content.

Focus on one thing, one problem, one solution. And keep the message incredibly clear.

Mistake #2: Perfection Not Progress
Of course, the correct saying is: Progress Not Perfection.
If a lead magnet has to be perfect before we can release it, then it never gets released. It’s a clever little way of procrastinating.
The Problem: I had very few, low-converting lead magnets out there because they weren’t good enough.
But the worst part is that it messes with your mind. It did with mine. I thought I was building the best possible lead magnets, but I released very few over those first 8 years.
Solution: Release fast and tweak often. A variation on the ‘perfect’ saying that I prefer is:
DONE is BETTER than PERFECT.
Mistake #3: Focus on the Delivery Layer, not the Marketing Layer
Oh boy, was this a bad idea. Creating products, building the infrastructure for a beautifully efficient business, and creating 1000s of hours of video training FIRST was absolutely the wrong thing to do.
Problem: Not understanding the importance of the Marketing Layer first causes business people to totally lose site of the priorities required to drive profit first!
Business - any business - is always about sales, marketing and profits. Without profits driven by the funnels that start with dozens of lead magnets, no business can survive.
Solution: Educate yourself about the Marketing Layer and get good at using lead magnets, driving traffic, converting traffic, and providing engaging content with great call-to-actions to build your list BEFORE doing anything else.

So, the Choice Is Obvious…
You must focus on building your list
with as many lead magnets as possible…
Time is NOT on your side, but we know money loves speed. The faster you move the quicker you see results. You have to figure out a way to move quickly to build your list with as many lead magnets as possible or your business won’t grow.
Every lead magnet requires a landing page, which requires TIME YOU DON’T HAVE and money you can’t spend. Landing pages are just more work for you making it almost impossible to get a lead magnet out quickly. And you can’t just throw up any landing page. If it doesn’t convert visitors into prospects, it’s worthless.
The competition has plenty of coin. Most of the ‘big guys’ you’re competing with have teams of writers (or oodles of cash & resources to throw around) to get their content created for them…FAST.
Good Lead magnets don’t write themselves. So, what if you’re not a writer? Maybe writing is a struggle for you. How will you create a quality lead magnet? You can’t afford to put out low-quality, poorly designed material.
Speaking of design, graphics can make or break a lead magnet. Nothing looks more unprofessional to your audience than cheesy looking graphics. It’s the fastest way to tell prospects that you’re not serious.
Tools and Trends change frequently, but they can often be the best lead magnets available because they’re fresh.
The shelf life may be short. But you don’t have the time or money to invest in creating lead magnets that won’t last. Your prospects want them though, so you lose out to someone who can produce them.

The longer you wait, the further behind you fall. Remember, list building is YOUR # 1 JOB. But admittedly, as an entrepreneur, you have many, many more tasks to complete.
