In this guest post from NAMS instructor Tom Treanor, we discover how to keep your blog and it's content focused on your Ideal Customer. Be sure to join Tom as he teaches us how to determine “Are You Blogging in Circles or Creating "Purpose-Driven Content" in our weekly live training.
5 Essentials to Having a Customer-Focused Blog
Your blog is the key to establishing your authority online. It's a powerful way to communicate your message without you having to personally retell it to each visitor. It's a self-service way for people to access your knowledge, your unique points-of-view, and even your sales messages.
You have a great opportunity with your blog!
But you'll never capitalize on it if you don't keep one important thing in mind. Your blog, and all of the content in it, needs to be completely focused on the needs of your ideal customers.
Do you think people will come back or recommend or share your blog if it's filled with uninspired posts written by someone who doesn't care? Nope!
So take that extra effort to make your blog truly customer-focused. Here are 5 ways that you can do this for your blog…
1) Understand their problems
Think about your customers and prospects. What are they really struggling with? Where do you consistently see them stumbling? Talk about solutions to these problems on your blog and you'll find that people come around more often!
2) Understand what they don't know
Similar to point #1, in conversations with prospective customers, you should be on the look out for their "information gaps". What things don't they understand? What are the things that you always need to teach them when discussing your industry, products or services? Teach them the basics and they'll love you for it!
3) Understand how they search
If you put yourself in the minds of your customers, you can also start to understand how they search. Why is this important? If you understand how they search, you can then write articles focused on these topics. If you rank in Google (or other search engines) for these terms, you can get prospects coming to your blog via search. That opens up a whole new channel for you!
4) Understand other things they like
You may know that they like your products or services. Let's say you sell high-end wine accessories. You may also come to learn that, in addition to wine, that they like wine-related travel and fine dining. So, in addition to writing about wine topics, you can talk about fine dining or vacations to wine regions. Suddenly, you've got a whole new set of topics that you can talk about on your blog (and new ways to provide value to your readers).
5) Understand their personalities
Lastly, you should understand the kind of personality your typical reader has. Are they fun loving, serious, lazy or disciplined? What kind of writing do they enjoy? Do they like to see pictures, humor, video or charts filled with data? Don't just copy, but you can see what other successful blogs in your industry are doing. You can also ask your customers what they like to read and why.
Now that you've gotten religious about focusing on your ideal customer. Now that you've got five key ways to focus on them even more, are you ready to get started?
