Cookie Cutter Marketing Never Works!
Create your recipe for your business success...
Our doorbell is broken.
When I’m in my basement office, I rely on the dogs to alert me when a visitor arrives. They bark like they’ve just seen a man slathered in gravy, but the truth is that they’re really hoping for a biscuit.
So, when Kenneth Ward strolled up and knocked on the door, I was already bounding up the basement steps to quiet the dogs. We don’t get many visitors in the woods, especially at 8:30 a.m.
Kenneth introduced himself as a timber buyer and mentioned he was cutting timber on the property adjacent to ours in the back. Then, he handed me his business card. I was sold.
It was a beautiful, etched card with his company information like most cards, but this one was very special.
The card was an eighth inch piece of wood.
I held it in my hand stroking the card, fascinated; Kenneth told me about the current good market for timber, and that we had plenty of it that needed to be thinned on our 95 acres in a spot difficult to access except from where he was already cutting on the neighbor’s land.
As I stroked the card, my thoughts bounced between the good fortune of having someone cut our timber from that side, and the brilliance of this wooden card.
I took Kenneth to the back porch and sat at the old table where we eat many of our meals. We worked out the details of the timber deal.
Then, I finally said, “I love this card.” Kenneth smiled proudly saying:
“Since I began using this card, our business has increased 20 percent.”
Right away, my marketing devil mind kicked in and I thought, “I need to get me a card like this!” But a few seconds later, my marketing business mind kicked in and straightened me out. I realized how ridiculous that was.
The card was beautiful, but how would a wooden card – used by a timber dealer – help me in my business? He got a 20 percent increase in business because a wooden business card was exactly the right card for his business that dealt in wood, lumber and timber.
By accident, I had stumbled onto one of the biggest problems in online business today. Too many marketers look for copycat techniques and cookie cutter businesses, assuming that any recipe for success will work for them. That’s a bad mistake, and often, incredibly costly and frustrating.
Fundamentals are fundamental
We all need to know how to do certain things to move our businesses forward.
- Customer relations
- Product creation
- Email marketing
- Affiliate relationships
- Website hosting
- And many, many more...
This list is long. Those are just a few of the many fundamental business elements that we should master and focus on.
But cookie-cutter business techniques, or stealing strategies and techniques from other businesses just because they worked for that business is certainly no indicator of success for you. You can certainly learn from those business techniques, but you need to evaluate the techniques to see they will work in your business.
Nicole Dean, one of the best marketers I know, reveals fundamental techniques and strategies every month with her IncomeCPR monthly coaching product. For $10 each month, she evaluates specific fundamental marketing techniques in-depth. She focuses on techniques that will work in just about any business, so you won't have to worry about adopting these processes in your.
What's your recipe for success?
My dad makes a mean egg custard pie. He uses the same cast iron skillet and the same (passed down) recipe that his mother used. He has mastered the fundamentals of my Grandma’s custard pie.
Her pie was the highlight of my summer trips to Grandma’s house . My dad’s pie is something I always look forward to when I visit him, but it ain’t the same pie. My dad can’t bake my grandmother’s pie, but his is really good and has a ton of value to me and my family independent of my grandmothers’s.
You can’t build a business that is a copycat of someone else’s, but you can master the fundamentals and build your own business that adds value to your market.
That’s what we do at NAMS – we teach you the fundamentals.
If you’re a beginner, you’ll want to learn the fundamentals of building a site, choosing a niche, marketing, and making sales. As an advanced marketer, you may need more information about outsourcing, creating multiple streams of passive income, asset protection, and creating a legacy. Those are fundamentals too.
