Prepare Gifts for Your
Virtual Book Tour Guests
by D’vorah Lansky, M.Ed.
I’d like to thank David for graciously hosting me, as a guest blogger, in celebration of the launch of my newest book, 21 Ways to Launch a Successful Virtual Book Tour.
We all love gifts, so during your virtual book tour celebration, why not prepare gifts to give to people who tour to your site? The most effective way to provide your gifts is by having an opt-in form on the sidebar of your blog. Offer something really special and unique so your blog visitors will be eager to request your gift in exchange for their name and email address. By doing this they will be subscribed to your list and you’ll be able to build an ongoing relationship with people who are interested in your topic.
Once people opt-in to receive their gift, you’ll need to have a system in place for delivering it to them. The simplest way to do this is to create a hidden page on your blog, where people can go to download their gift. A hidden page means that the name of the page does not show up in the navigation menu. Once you set up the page, you can add a thank you message and a link for people to click to access their gift.
Next, view this page and copy the URL from the address bar. This is the URL that you will want to include in the thank you email they’ll receive as a result of entering their name and email address into your opt-in form. Then when people receive the thank you email, they’ll click to access the giveaway and be taken to this hidden page to download their gift.
There are many email delivery (auto-responder) companies to choose from. AWeber is considered to be the industry favorite however there are other companies such as iContact, Constant Contact, and Get Response that are considered to be reputable.
Types of Gifts
The best gifts are those that provide value to people who are interested in your topic. A few examples would be:
- A checklist
- A workbook
- A tips sheet
- An MP3 audio recording where you are sharing a training or interviewing an industry expert
- A free chapter of your book (which I’ll go into more detail on below)
A Free Chapter of Your Book: Giving readers a sneak peek of your book will yield increased book sales. A simple solution for providing a sample of your book to potential readers is for you to offer a free chapter of your book, if you have the publishing rights to do so. In addition to the free chapter, you can include a cover page, a table of contents, a header, and footer, and a marketing page with a compelling invitation for people to purchase your book. This also provides you with a way to grow your list of subscribers and create the opportunity for an ongoing relationship with new readers.
The simplest format to deliver is a PDF file. The reason you want to provide the PDF version rather than the Word version is that when people click on the link to a PDF file, it opens up the page online. When they click on the link to a Word doc file, they receive a pop-up box requesting permission to download a file, and this could scare off potential readers. Additionally, your content is more protected in a PDF file, rather than an editable Word document.
Harness the Power of your Virtual Book Tour
By having an attractive site and an exciting gift offer, you’ll be able to build ongoing relationships with your readers. During your virtual book tour you’ll be able to invite people to your blog, from the social networks and by sending invitations to your current email subscribers. You’ll also be able to harness the power of your virtual book tour by having a compelling signature at the end of each of your blog posts, inviting people back to your site to receive a special gift. Have you ever purchased a book after viewing a sneak peek of the content? What are your favorite types of gifts to receive, when filling out an opt-in form? Do you have any questions about this process? Scroll down to share your thoughts and join in the conversation.
