Multiply the ROI of Your NAMS Investment
by Richard Goutal
There is no question that NAMS is unique among live events for online marketers. If you have attended previously, then you already know this. If you are new to NAMS you will be pleasantly surprised by many things:
- Open laptops for learning by doing (not just note-taking).
- Sessions geared to marketing experience and ability.
- Choice in topics (not one-size-fits-all, massive convention presentations).
- Instructors that focus on your learning (not on pitching and sales).
But here is something you may not even realize while you are there: The structure and tone of NAMS conferences uniquely facilitates your ability to network successfully.
I'll come back to tell you why, but first, what is "successful networking." To me that means an initial interaction with another person with similar, overlapping needs and interests, that leads to developing rapport, and that has the potential for a mutually beneficial partnership in some way. Keep in mind that the fruition of a partnering relationship typically takes time and only rarely will be cemented at the same specific event where you meet. Also, the types of partnerships vary:
- A potential mentoring relationship
- A potential mastermind partner
- A potential virtual assistant, technical consultant, or other resource partner
- A potential customer
- And most exciting of all: A potential collaborative partner
If you collaborate with another marketer, it's just a fancy way to say, "work together" with another marketer or with other marketers. There are lots of ways this can happen, limited only by your imagination, including:
- collaborative list-building
- collaborative product creation
- collaborative promotion (or, cross-promotion)
- collaborative selling
- any combination of the above
Did you know that all truly successful marketers collaborate repeatedly. They might use different terminology like joint ventures, ad swaps, joint giveaway events, syndication groups, or something else. But successful marketers are "serial collaborators"!
And, did you know that most collaborations either began or were cemented at a live event. I could tell you story after story that marketers have told me where this was true.
Now let me tell you a secret. I am a lousy networker. I like organizing, writing, and public speaking but meeting new people intimidates me. That's what led me to conduct a series of webinars where I interviewed a variety of experts on networking at live events. I wanted to learn from them to help myself.
Now I have packaged all these webinars and some other networking helps into a training site called, How to Network at Live Events. http://networkingatliveevents.com I invite you to do this training before you leave for your next live event. It will multiply the investment you are making in the conference and travel expenses.
Now, let me tell you why the NAMS conferences make an excellent venue for networking with other online marketers. A great place to put into practice what you learn on the How to Network at Live Events site.
1) At the NAMS conference, you keep moving around. Compare that to conferences held in one giant convention center where you sit in the same seat for most of the conference. Sitting next to new people is an aid in meeting new people with no stress.
2) At the NAMS conference, you can easily find people that are marketing at your level by attending the sessions according to the designations of beginner, intermediate, and advanced. This is important because it is easier to begin developing collaborative relationships with people at, or just slightly above, your own level of experience and progress.
3) There is an atmosphere of "we are here to help you." This begins with David Perdew, the founder and director. At the NAMS conferences I attended, I was able to have several conversations with him. These took place naturally and without stress. The same is true with the successful marketers who are the instructors. This has not been my experience at numerous other conferences I have attended.
The really important part is that this "we are here to help you" attitude - this open, informal, and generous spirit trickles down through to everyone. Altogether, it makes conversing with others easy and natural.
There is much to learn from the sessions at NAMS. But your success in business is a combination of developing new skills and developing new relationships. Skills get you just so far, but outsourcing and virtual assistants can help. But for sky-high success, there is no substitute for great partners.
Yes, it is important to plan ahead with respect to the sessions you want to attend for skill development when you go to a live event. But it is equally, indeed probably more important, to plan ahead with respect to networking.
The experts I interviewed talk a lot about setting goals, assessing your needs along with the kinds of things that you offer to others in a collaborative partnership, and many other specifics regarding preparation for networking.
Do the training on networking if you can. http://networkingatliveevents.com But take time to think ahead and plan for successful networking at the NAMS conference you attend.
