Blessings seen and unseen…

By Jen Perdew 2 Comments

Blessings - Seen and Unseen…

Just a couple of weeks ago, one of my favorite online business guys posted on Facebook about the terrible relationship he had with his dad.

I felt his pain across the ocean and through time.

He said he was fine without having a relationship with his dad, but he also longed for the pride of a father in his son.

Of course, I thought about my dad and how blessed I was to have this man in my life. As the oldest of 5 children, I think we had a special relationship. But I think my other siblings felt the same way too.

He passed away almost 3 years ago at 91 after 5 years of progressive dementia, multiple heart conditions, diabetes, and other ailments.

Two years into the dementia, he didn’t know my name. He knew he should know it - and recognized me with a smile for a couple more years when I came, but just couldn’t find the words to say my name.

But for all of my years until his dementia, he was my go-to guy. I knew I could get encouragement and understanding from him even if it was delivered sometimes in a ham-handed way.

He was a product of The Great Depression. He was determined that his children would never grow up in the poverty that he experienced, even though his memories of his family occupied most of his stories. With 7 brothers, 5 of whom survived to adulthood, he became the communication hub for the family.

RoycePerdewArmyAirCorp-2

And that’s ironic since, as mom told me this week, dad didn’t know how to use a phone when he left the hills of Kentucky for the Army Air Corps at the age of 17. He sure learned how to use it well later in life keeping in touch with brothers, children, cousins, friends, and distant family.

Dad was very opinionated. Our politics were diametrically opposed. We learned to not talk about that.

But even when he was grumbling, he was looking for a way to help someone. His generosity, kindness, and real caring knew no bounds. He always had enough to share.

He had a ton of sayings that I cherish now because there was so much wisdom and wit in them.

Shirley15

(Don’t judge me, but being who I am, I’m creating an ecommerce store to honor those sayings. It’s just in the beginning stages on Facebook. Like this page and I’ll let you know when it’s ready to rock and roll.)

During his difficulties, I was lucky enough to support him by traveling to Florida every couple of months for 5 years to help my mom take care of my dad. Having an online business that allowed me to work from anywhere as long as I had decent Internet was another incredible blessing.

This week, Charlsa and I visited my mom.

With 5 kids, and 4 sisters and brothers, she gets a lot of attention so we don’t have to worry too much about her. And she’s healthy enough emotionally and physically at 87 to play golf with friends, embrace her church friends fully, and play cards with the best neighbors ever.

RoyceAndShirleyCropped

The only way I know that she’s slowed down is that she’s stopped working at the Food Pantry for the homeless (too hard on her back).

Life is pretty good for mom.

Living alone after 69 years of marriage isn’t easy, I’m sure, because there has to be a huge hole in her life where dad was. But I’m also convinced he never left because she keeps his memory in every corner of her life.

They were a great love story. And someday, I’ll tell the whole thing, but not yet.

But here’s an example of their love.

When dad was being wheeled into the operating room 7 years before his death to get a pacemaker, my mom stopped the nurse, bent down, and planted a gentle kiss on dad’s forehead. Then, she looked up at the nurse with steely eyes and said, “This is the love of my life for 62 years. You bring him back safely.”

The nurse heard the unspoken words “...or ELSE!” loud and clear. She said, “Yes, ma’am!”

DadCemetery072022-2

Dad was a veteran. He served in the Army Air Corps and later the newly formed United States Air Force at the end of World War II. One of the benefits he cherished was the honor of being buried with other veterans in a beautiful cemetery.

Mom will be buried there too.

And when Charlsa and I saw how beautifully maintained the cemetery was, we decided to do the same for ourselves since I have that honor too as a Vietnam (era) veteran.

My parents weren’t wealthy, but they had a lot of wealthy friends. They attracted quality people in their lives because they were quality people.

DadCemetery072022-1

Mom likes to tell a special story about Dad’s wealth.

One of the neighbors came over one day with his investment statement he’d just received in the mail and bragged, “It’s official, Royce. I’m a millionaire.”

“Well, so am I,” my dad said, not to be outdone. “Of course, it’s all invested in my 5 kids, but the dividends are great!”

And he did invest in us.

When I was 15, dad decided I needed to go to Europe on a whirlwind 9-countries-in-21-days school trip because he knew it would be a great experience.

It was $750. And we didn’t have the money, but he found it.

And just like his own experience in Japan after the war, it was a pivotal experience for me that taught me more than any class I’d ever taken or would take.

RoycePerdewFamilycirca1966

Travel, it turns out, was THE great educational experience.

Money was especially tight then because when I was 9, my mom’s dad killed himself leaving her brothers and sisters without any living parents. My grandmother had died two years previously of lung cancer.

My aunts and uncles (mom’s brothers and sisters) were 12, 15, 18, and 20. I was the oldest of three with two more showing up in the next two years, and soon to be the middle of nine kids..

That could have been an unbelievably difficult time for any family. And frankly, most would have split up the four aunts and uncles to other families.

Dad wouldn’t hear of it.

Of course, they would come live with us. We’d make room. And tighten our belts. And find a way.

We always found a way.

A few weeks ago, we were at dinner with a couple of friends who bowed their heads to say grace. I heard them say, “Dear Lord, thank you for all our blessings. Seen and Unseen. Amen.”

Seen. And Unseen.

If I would go back through this article with a red pen to mark all the things that were unseen blessings, the page would look like a bloody murder had been committed here.

Red ink everywhere.

As I get older, I’m so thankful for the unseen blessings in my life. Unseen blessings are those things I don’t see or think about, but are continuing to work in my favor. If I demanded to know about all my blessings all the time, I’d short-change myself.

Three beautiful kids. Ten grandchildren that I don’t see nearly enough. And the most amazing supportive and loving wife/partner anyone could have.

And if I look at all the “problems” in my life over the past 70 years, I can’t find one. They all look like blessings at this point.

The unseen blessings are a hundred times more important to me than those I see everyday. They are the blessings that protect me (mostly from myself) and bring me good.

And I want all the good.

But I have to be careful about good and bad.

Years ago, I read a translation of the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, and one line stuck with me.

“There is no good or bad, but labeling it makes it so.”

I’ve stopped judging whether something is good or bad. Whatever happens can be comfortable or uncomfortable, peaceful or challenging, rewarding or heartbreaking.

Those are momentary feelings.

But declaring it good or bad would mean that I can predict the future. I can’t. Good or bad is the result of something happening now. If I try to assign good or bad, I’m not living in the moment, so I’ll miss all the sweet juice of life.

Of course, I can impact the result by doing what I think will lead to a good or bad result, but I have no way of predicting the outcome.

For that, I must rely on the greatest gift of all…Unseen Blessings.

If you have Unseen Blessings that you're grateful for click one of the share buttons on the side of the page and comment below to tell me about your unseen blessings!

Business Operations: 4 Steps for De-Stressing Your Business Right Now

Business Operations: 4 Steps for De-Stressing Your Business Right Now

What Could You Do with an Extra 5 Hours?

Business Operations

Documented business operations are vital for your business to function. If you don't have documented processes, then your business operations might as well not exist. If you are the only one that knows what to do and when in your business, that's a huge problem.

Think about your Business Operations from an outsider's point of view.

Would it be easy for someone to step in and tackle tasks and systems easily?

On the flip side, what would you do if you can gain an hour a day starting tomorrow? Imagine gaining five hours per week.

For instance, are you able to take a Friday off without worrying about what's getting done? Or would you feel stressed out?

You can do that when you put these four steps in place to de-stress your business in confidence right now.

Business Operations: 4 Steps for De-Stressing Your Business Right Now

1. Proper Project Management

If you’re still managing your team with email and Skype messages, stop it. Things get lost, messages are forgotten (or never received) and balls are dropped. Not to mention all the time you spend sifting through your endless list of emails for that one piece of information you need.

Sign up for Asana, Trello, or Slack today, and start putting all your projects there instead. You’ll have one place to look for tasks that are still outstanding, and be able to tell at a glance what needs your immediate attention.

You and your team will love it!

#2 Proper Documentation

Do you find yourself reinventing the wheel every time you have to record a podcast or upload a video to your blog?

Take a few minutes and document the steps, then next time you have to do it, or better yet, when you hand it off to a VA, you’ll be able to quickly work out what needs to happen.

There will be fewer mistakes, and the work will get done faster. Your team will love it!

#3 Create a Business Organization Chart

If you have multiple people on your team, this is critical.

Rather than everyone coming to you for questions—or worse, asking the wrong person and getting the wrong answer—take the time to create an organization chart. Add it to your operations manual and make sure your team knows where it is and what it’s for.

Now, rather than your Skype chat blowing up with questions all day long, you’ll have time for the more important tasks.

#4 Use Time Blocking

Get out your calendar and start making appointments with yourself. Decide when you’ll check email and when you’ll work on client projects, then stick to the schedule.

These self-imposed deadlines will not only force you to get the work done, but they’ll help keep you focused. This structuring of your time means no more wasting time on Facebook, since you’ll be working on your business.

All of these systems can be set up in an afternoon—at least initially. But the time they save you when you use them consistently is phenomenal. An hour a day is just the beginning, but you have to take action.

You have to put in the work first before you can earn the rewards, but the benefits are sweet. In the end, you’ll wonder how you ever managed before you did these four things to improve your business.

Business Operations: 7 Ways Streamline Your Business by Outsourcing

By David Perdew Leave a Comment

Instead of Guessing, Maybe We Should Just Ask!

Timeforquestions

The key to serving your clients - and making stacks of cash - is to know a bit about them so you can serve them well and often.

How do most marketers operate today?

They build a list, write an email, and blast it out to the whole list hoping that someone on the list wants what they’re offering. Of course, there’s so many problems with that approach, it’s laughable.

But I’ve been guilty of it too.

As your list grows, staying in touch with everyone to find out who they are and what they need is nearly impossible. But with simple surveys, and a simple analytics tool available to everyone, you can uncover amazing information.

Today’s blog post is about that process.

Let’s start with the survey

After discussing the campaign with Jen, we honed in on our goal with the survey until it made the most sense. We came up with three goals:

  1. Find out what niche(s) most of our community is working to provide the right kind of training.
  2. Understand the kind of marketing tools/techniques that people were using to sell their products and provide training on those and the tools they wanted to know more about.
  3. Offer a $100 coupon to apply against our product catalog to entice more people to take the survey and to make sales as they see other things in the cart they want.

Jen started with 2 questions because we wanted to keep it as simple as possible.

Question 1: What is your primary niche?

Question 2: What are your primary marketing tools (to make sales)?

But because we wanted to know a little more, we dug a little deeper.

Question 1a: What is your secondary niche?

Question 2a: What are the 2 marketing tools (to make sales) you'd like to learn more about to implement in your business?

The survey looked like this:

survey1
survey2
survey3
survey4
survey5
survey6

Then we began analyzing the results

The key was to make it easy and painless with no personal details. And to make sure the coupon was being delivered automatically so they could redeem it immediately.

When completed, it was a simple, multiple-choice survey that automatically fed the answers into a Google Sheet - a free tool everyone has access to.

survey10

As of this writing, we had 311 responses.

And we’re learning things we hadn’t expected to learn - as you always do if you monitor your investigative processes from inside and outside the process.

So far, we have enough numbers to give us good trends.

Some of them confirm what we thought; others did not.

For example, the top five marketing tools/techniques were:

  1. Email marketing
  2. Social media
  3. Blogging
  4. Affiliate marketing
  5. Video marketing

I think the surprise to all of us was the interest in Blogging as a selling tool.

survey7

Next, we looked at the primary niche

When you’re creating promotional partnerships, the question most often asked is: “Who is your community and what do they like?”

That’s a tough question to answer if you have a large community. So, again, we have to ask.

survey8

These percentages did confirm one guess. When asked that question, I always answered that about 20% of our community is interested in the “Make Money Online” niche. And the rest were in other business niches. That was true, but I wasn’t sure at all what businesses the other 80% were trying to build.

  • Self Improvement was huge with 13%
  • Health and Medical was 8% and if you added in Diet and Fitness, we would be over 11%
  • Local Marketing Agency was nearly 8%. That shocked me.
  • And Finance / Investing was almost 6%. Another shock.

So, what does that tell me?

Business building tools and training fundamentals in the “Make Money Online” niche will apply to nearly everyone in our community. But we can also niche down and offer self-improvement or health to a smaller segment and be really well targeted.

What did the secondary niche tell us?

This question helped us identify future trends.

As people mature in their businesses, the niches become more focused. Often, the secondary niche is the passion niche and business people evolve into that.

survey9

The surprising trends here were:

  • Make Money Online dropped by half from the primary.
  • Self-Improvement rose to the top with the same percentage numbers holding steady as a major focus of a lot of people.
  • None with more than 10% told us that a ton of people haven’t thought about it, or they are completely focused on the primary niche.
  • The big surprise was that Ecommerce doubled from 3 to 6%. So, there’s substantial interest in growing that.

What can we learn from this information?

Now, we have a much better understanding of our audience and should be able to target them much better with tools and techniques that help more.

This information forms a basis for our decisions on:

  • Training product creation
  • Affiliate offers
  • Webinar presentations
  • Email language
  • Target market segmentation
  • And better Message to Market Match

I hope you found this helpful. Let me know in the comments if you’ve done anything like this in your business or if you think it would help you create better segmentation and better customer experience going forward.

**** In the time it took to write this post, our survey responses increased by 1/3. Lesson? Make sure you create your survey with a specific time frame in mind to accept results and don't jump to conclusions. Luckily for us, our percentages stayed the same so we can continue forward with our initial hypothesis.

5 Types of Email Marketing

By David Perdew Leave a Comment

5 Types of Email Marketing

Types of Email Marketing

There are many types of email marketing. Today, we'll explore five of them.

Engagement is the key to success. But how do you engage the people on your ist? Through excellent communication.

As an email marketer, you have the responsibility to your list to communicate with them consistently. This does not mean you only reach out when you are trying to sell them something. It goes much deeper than that. Check out the types of email marketing you should consider.

Types of Email Marketing

1. Welcome Emails

If you land a customer, a subscriber, or a new client, the best way to leave an impression is to welcome them. Thanks to email automation, you can use welcome emails as an advantage to embrace, engage, and leave your customers coming back for more.

You want to give the best impression of your business as you possibly can, and by welcoming a user the moment they subscribe, buy or deal with your company, shows that you mean business.

2. Newsletters

If you want to show your loyal subscribers and new ones that you mean business, be sure to keep them constantly updated with your business. Whether it is new content or a new product, you need to make the content of your newsletters as vibrant and engaging as possible.

All you need to fulfill engagement is to be consistent with a schedule and innovative in the way you prepare your newsletter content. Using an email automation platform, there is no reason why you can't produce a monthly newsletter filled with something your list can look forward to. Keep the audience anticipating your newsletters. Certainlyyou don't want to make everything about your business look like a sales pitch.

3. Updates

Step into the shoes of a loyal customer and understand their needs and wants. Research and use email metrics to remain on track with your audience.

The basic idea of updates is to keep your customers informed of how your business is doing, what's new, and how you are constantly trying to improve your business. By updating your loyal customer, it leaves a good impression, keeping them motivated and enticed to support your business more.

4. Affiliate Offers

If you want to broaden your marketing avenue with an additional stream of revenue, you might consider becoming an affiliate for a person or business.

Use email marketing by promoting their products and content. Anything you sell with your affiliate link earns you money.

As you build a relationship with another business or person through affiliate offers, you can also help increase the reputation of your business, which is a great marketing strategy in itself. This can help your own business to expand and grow, all while earning at the same time.

5. Surveys

The idea behind building relationships is to engage with your list regularly. How do you do this?  Through email marketing. Over a series of emails you send, you are letting your list learn more about you, your business, and earn their trust.

You also can create a 2-way form of communication with your customers by introducing surveys in your email marketing.

As you are letting your list get to know and like you, a survey is how you get to know more about your subscribers. A survey shows you care enough to ask them about their needs and wants.

It puts you in a great position to always to improve, which is the perfect marketing strategy to maintain loyal customers and invite new ones.

To conclude, email marketing has a wide range of different forms of communication and you can utilize the diversity to improve your marketing strategy. All you need is to have a clear concept, idea, and implementation of your email marketing strategy.

8 Benefits of Email Marketing

Email Marketing

Contrary to what you may have heard, email marketing is not dead. Far from it. However, it's not something you 'do' sometimes. Your audience wants to hear from you, so be consistent in your communication with your list.

Before you think email marketing is too much work, or not worth it, consider these nine benefits first.

1. ROI can be HUGE!

It takes time and effort to research your identify your ideal audience and their needs.  Outside of your time spent on research, your overall investment is small.

Gather your data and create an irresistible lead magnet in exchange for their email information. Once you get them to take that first action, you've got them hooked and ready to present your offers to.

2. Budget-Friendly

There's no doubt about it, sending email is inexpensive.

You might pay for a 3rd party service to deliver your email and you may hire a writer to create your emails for you. Overall, the costs involved with email are pretty small. And when you consider #1 on this list, any costs really pay for themselves. Or they should if you're doing it right.

3. Most People Have an Email Address

So, a lot of people have Facebook accounts, but email still wins.

You could email your best friends, parents, and sister, but you most likely can't Facebook (verb) all of them. The same goes for a lot of people on your mailing lists.

4. Direct Access

Unlike other marketing methods, email reaches your subscribers directly and is addressed to them specifically, unlike the general broadcasting we do on social media and in other mediums.

5. Personal and Customized

Email is also very personal and can be customized with names and other information subscribers voluntarily provide like their geographic location, their interests, their goals, and more.

6. Targeting

It's easy to create multiple segments for your lists. It provides the opportunity to fine-tune your targeting.

You can segment customers based on the types of products they're interested in and subscribers based on the information that attracts them most.

Where else do you have so much control?

7. Retain Visitors

When someone visits your website for the first time, the chances of them coming back are almost ZERO.

By asking them to leave their email address, you get the opportunity to contact them anytime you want. For example, if you have a blog, you can email your list announcing the latest blog post.

8. Build and Cultivate Relationships

Email is an opportunity for your business to build your brand and gain the trust of your subscribers.

Do your email marketing right and your subscribers will feel like they know you and can count on you for sound advice and great products.

Conclusion

Email marketing is a strategy you should include with your overall marketing plan. Never take your email list for granted.

Signing up for your newsletter is no longer something busy people today are interested in receiving. Think about your own inbox.  Do you read the newsletters you had subscribed to in the past? There is so much stuff coming to our inboxes that we really don’t look at anymore. So why would this not be the same for your site visitor?

A call to action is only half of the battle. You need to create a motive to act. This is a specific incentive – where the Which, What, How, and Benefit needs to be specific to their problem you can potentially solve. Keep in mind that you want to target the right visitor to respond, someone who will buy from you, not just kick the tires looking for freebies only.
