6 Ways to Improve Personal Productivity During the Great Coronavirus Lockdown of 2020!

personal productivity 2000

The good and the bad of being stranded at home for weeks at a time - especially if you’re doing business online...

The Great Coronavirus Lockdown of 2020 has caused angst for a lot of folks because they’re not taking charge of their personal productivity, so I decided to write about 6 methods that I’m using including eliminating the psyche-killer: Energy Loops.

Unfortunately, I kind of love the lockdown. Not people getting sick, of course. That sucks, but I love being forced to re-evaluate and re-focus.

This feels like a forced reboot, just like I have to do with my computer when it gets sluggish and on memory overload.

But frankly, I've never been so productive.

Now, I have a really good excuse to be isolated in the woods - without feeling anti-social.

Someone asked me the other day if I'm seeing more of my neighbors since everyone's home during lockdown. Heck, I'm so deep in the woods, I haven't seen most of my neighbors in 15 years. I wouldn't know them if I ran into them on the street.

But productive? Holy Cow! I've been so productive that I could hardly find time to write this post.

When the coronavirus started causing shutdowns across the country, my daughter Jen and I started talking about how we could help people get some control back in their lives - and fast.

The Fast Business Startup Virtual Workshop was the answer. It was 2 days of intense focus on setting up an online income stream by focusing on numbers, not products or launches, or all the other stuff people tell you you have to do.

We focused on numbers. Four numbers.

  • Clicks
  • Conversion
  • Price
  • Revenue

And it blew people's minds.

You can find out more about this here.

But now, I'm taking a breath.

The 2 days were exhausting, but now we had replays to edit and transcripts to create. Plus, I decided to do a Case Study on how we used a $1 ticket to a virtual live workshop to drive more than $20,000 in profit AND create a new income stream for ourselves.

So, finally, I'm taking an entire hour to write this post all about how to improve personal productivity, staying positive in difficult times, and what I've noticed during the lockdown.

1) Being home is awesome.

improve personal productivityBut that may just be me because I'm easily distracted. It forces me to stay in one spot and focus on what's in front of me. Being home and reducing travel to almost zilch has also allowed for more continuous and focused effort without the start and stop disruption.

I noticed that when I looked back at my coffee shop visits, I was really looking forward to seeing friends who didn't even know my name unless it was written on a coffee cup.

2) I have an Internet challenge.

Like really slow DSL at the house with no alternative. I've complained about it for 15 years and used it as an excuse to not do some things (Facebook Live - I'm talking about you...) It's time to get over it.

When the major news networks are doing live interviews with people in their bedroom offices with kids screaming outside the door, we all have permission to focus on the content, not the flash.

And I'm 15 miles from town - any town. So I used to spend a lot of time on the road going to Starbucks or other fast internet spots. During this time, I decided not to do that. (Couldn't actually, since nearly everything is closed.)

3) Closing the social media black hole.

I was at my mother-in-law's the other day (my one day a week trip into town to check on her and work on high-speed). And I was making a cup of coffee in the kitchen. She came out of the bedroom, sighed, and said, "I came back here to clean up the kitchen, but I got on Facebook instead - and that was over an hour ago."

And she's 97!

Social media is a tool, but easily becomes a thief stealing our best hours. I'm holding steady with that by limiting my time to morning and night.

(**Want to know how to stay focused all day? Start by scheduling your social media to specific time slots in your calendar! Then close out all social media apps, web pages etc. until your scheduled time.)

4) Email. This is our life blood.

Email marketing accounts for about 80% of our business in some form. But I hate email personally... And I'm now only checking my personal account 2 to 3 times a WEEK.

I can do that because I've set up systems. I have a private account for coaching clients only. And when I get an email to that account, I get a text message on my watch and phone so I can respond fast.

JV Partners know to skype or Facebook message me. And Insiders and other product buyers go to our support desk, chat on the site or one of our product specific Facebook groups.

5) Turned off the news.

I limit myself to 30 minutes or less of news each day. This is a sure-fire way for staying positive in difficult times. I will catch up on news using my Flipboard app at night. Short of a nuclear bomb, nothing needs my attention right now!

I'm amazed how I get sucked in by the rubber-neck syndrome. Watching the news can be an emotional pot that gets stirred way too easily. Not only does it affect me then, but it lingers in my psyche for a while.

And for me to do this is a massive change. I’m a proud, former journalist who worked in newspapers and magazines. The main reason I left the news business though was all the bad stuff we saw and reported each day made me crazy. So, I had to quit.

6) Energy Loops.

You've read this entire post so far to get to this point. I could write all day about energy loops.

Recently, I read somewhere about energy loops causing us all kinds of grief. I'm not talking about woo-woo universal energy (although I believe that too), but personal energy expended with our mind and our labor.

It’s wasted energy. The very definition means nothing gets done.

An energy loop equals anything started but not finished yet it lives in our brain. And they are everywhere from large to small. And often, the size doesn’t matter. An energy drain is an energy drain is an energy drain - they’re all equal.

Here's an example.

The picture shows a small tree stump. It's a poplar tree. About 5 years ago, a poplar sprout came up in a how to stay focused all dayplastic flower pot that was in (what passes for) my front yard between the crepe myrtles at our house.

It was tiny, like a weed.

Instead of yanking it out of the ground, I thought that I'd just plant it somewhere else on our 95 acres.

After all, we’ve only got about 45,000 of them according to the University of Maryland Extension report on Forest Thinning. I might miss this little sprout though. It could be very special.

Even when my wife asked me what this was, I told her I'd take care of it...

The energy loop was opened the moment I didn’t pull that dude right out of the pot.

This is how it works.

Here's a tree that I'm going to move. It's on my mental list. It staked out a spot on my brain and it's never going away until it's resolved.

That was 5 years ago.

The tree grew fast - as poplars do. The pot had a hole in the bottom for drainage as pots do. The poplar roots squeezed through that hole finding life as they do.

It anchored the little tree in the soil below. I could no longer move the pot because it literally was rooted in the ground.

My wife would point out that the tree is growing fast and it’s really too close to the house.  She asked me when I was going to get rid of it. “Soon” was always my answer. I can still dig it up and move it, I told her.

But it didn't just grow roots in the ground.

They were burrowing into my psyche too.

Every time I walked into the house, I'd glance over and see that tree. My mind would nudge me, "You've got to take care of that." And I'd think, "Soon, sure. When I get a minute."

It kept growing...both in the ground and in my brain. It reached 10 feet tall. And I thought about it every day because I saw every day when I came out of the house.

After a trip to Atlanta, I glanced over at the tree. It was about 7 feet shorter.

It had been cut off about 3 feet off the ground. My wife had found a handsaw in the basement and went after it.

The pot was still intact. But it still wouldn't budge because the roots were so deep. So the first step was to remove the pot, then cut the rest of the tree off, and then dig out the roots. "I'll get to that," I told myself. I've got all the tools.

That was 2 years ago.

Because of my internet challenge here in the woods, I sometimes drive to town to work at my mother-in-law's house where I get high-speed cable.

Last weekend, when I came home from a full day of working in town on the high-speed, I walked by the tree, the abbreviated version that's been dead now for a couple of years, and the pot was gone. My wife and niece broke the pot and spread out the dirt in the garden.

Then, she said, "I want to learn to use the chainsaw."

Ok - it's time to get that tree out of the yard. And I'll do it. I've got some time tomorrow 🙂

This is the CLASSIC energy loop.

Five years ago, I opened it up when I didn't dispose of that tree. Thinking about that tree and putting off the solution, I expended enough energy to power a small office building. Unfinished, little or large projects take the energy that we could otherwise use to improve personal productivity and be more productive in life.

When we say we’re tired, often it’s mentally tired because we’ve expended so much energy - doing nothing - on stuff that could have been resolved long ago.

An energy loop is completely unnecessary.

All it takes is little action.

There's an old saying that resolves every energy loop:

"Never put off till tomorrow what you could do today."

We do this at home. We do it at work. And we do it in business.

A productivity expert knows how to eliminate the energy loops by outsourcing and delegating, or just getting the damn chainsaw out of the closet.

In the comments, tell me about your energy loop that needs to be closed.

5 Essential Steps to Increasing Your List and Making More Money

5 Essential Steps to Increasing Your List and Making More Money

5 Essential Steps to Increasing Your List and Making More Money

Step 1: Mindset: List Building is Always First

I was recently talking to a coaching client who has built incredible traffic to her website. But she wasn’t focused on list building. She was focused on making sales.

But then her traffic dried up and so did her sales.

Luckily, we were able to get her into a list building mindset quickly, but honestly, it never should have happened. But I understand it because I had a bad mindset around list building too. It was an afterthought.

To why I waited so long to start building our lists, let’s do a quick synopsis of the situation and then I'll go into specific detail about how we solved the problem.

From 2008 to 2015, I ran the NAMS Workshop - a very successful two-times-a-year marketing workshop unlike any other with 300-400 people in attendance.

After 6 years, we stopped the workshops to focus on the community, membership, and training that is known as the MyNAMS Insiders Club.

My list was less than 7,000 people which was abysmal because of all the promotions and connections we'd made.

If I were focused on list building during that time, we would have been easily over 100,000 people on the list.

So, that was my mistake - ignoring the fact that list building is always first.

toprioritysignSince we changed our priorities - list building is first - we've solved that problem.

Social media is the gift that keeps on giving in many ways when it comes to marketing online, but usually, you have to spend a lot of money to get conversions.

And that's becoming more and more costly. I’ll tell you about a tool at the end of this post to make it so much easier and more natural.

So, how did we grow our list from 7,000 to 50,000 twice in 3 years and why twice?

That's a long story. And I'll reveal most of the details in this post including our list building strategy.

But first, it starts with goals - specifically list building goals.

  • What’s your goal? Make it easy.
  • What’s your goal by the end of August?
  • Then by the end of this quarter?
  • Then by the end of the year?

It’s much easier to accomplish your goals when they’re broken down into smaller chunks.

Let’s say you want to add 1000 people over the next 5 months. That’s doable. That’s just 200 people per month.

But don’t make it hard on yourself. Shoot for 100 people in your first month.

Remember, list building is a cumulative effort that builds with consistency.

One list building effort enhances the next and so on.

Our goal was to double our revenue when we had a list of 7,000 people - mostly buyers.

The easiest way to do that, we decided, was to double our list. And over the next few months, we did exactly that by getting more traffic and focusing on delivering more value.

Step 2: Fix your list building problem fast?

You may not know it but you have a list building problem.

Fortunately, they’re simple to solve. The two problems are:

  1. Bogus email signups to get your freebie and then they’re gone. As many as 85% of subscribers online (in general) have admitted to using bogus emails.
  2. New subscribers - if any - dribble in a little bit at a time.

There are many other problems you’ll encounter AFTER getting people on your list, but today we’re only going to deal with these issues.

My first online mentor many years ago always talked about having enough lines in the water.

“If you want to catch a lot of fish, you’ve got to have a lot of lines in the water.”

Fishing is a really good analogy for list building.

  • The water is the pool of subscribers. Anyone with an email address is in the water.
  • Targeting a hot fishing hole is like finding a profitable hot niche. You’ll get a lot more fish when they are hungry for what you’ve got.
  • The right bait attracts the fish just like the right lead magnet converts prospects into new subscribers.
  • Having as many lines as possible in the water increases the fisherman’s chances of catching a lot of fish just as having many lead magnets out in the world increases your chances of landing more subscribers.

FishingLinesIntheWaterAnd if done well, your many, many lines in the water will bring you more subscribers automatically…

If you have the two problems we listed above (and who doesn’t?), you have to fix it fast because bogus emails and the slow trickle of signups will drain your pocketbook fast. And it will frustrate the heck out of you.

Remember, earlier we talked about setting realistic list building daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual goals. We did that too. Our goal was to build our list from 7,000 REAL people to 50,000.

We achieved that in about 6 months.

The trick was to have a lot of lines in the water.

We used as many techniques and tools to snag targeted subscribers as possible such as:

  • Leveraged Relationships - we had partners that we cajoled into hosting us on a podcast or webinar. I called in all the favors.
  • Created an affiliate program - to pay current subscribers to bring in new subscribers.
  • Built lead magnets - high-quality content that solved real problems and helped people in targeted niches jump onboard.
  • Saturate social media - posted many of those lead magnets on social media.
  • Attended Live Events - whether speaking or in the audience, I was gathering leads and helping people as much as possible to create new relationships.

What if you don’t have any list building activities working for you right now?

Most people are afraid of list building when they start because they don’t want to do it wrong. Let’s kick that to the curb and focus on doing it the easy way.

Ask a few questions, and then take some action based on the answers:

  • Where’s your market?

Enter description text here.Do they hangout on Facebook? LinkedIn? Twitter? Others? Find the hot niche so you can drop a line in the water.

  • What’s their problem that you can solve?

Ask questions. Read comments. Pay attention. They will give you lots of hints.

  • Can you start a conversation?

In Facebook groups or other social media, you can talk to many or one, but make sure you’re offering value.

  • Do you have a valuable gift to offer people?

When they express an interest, tell them you happen to have a report (checklist, template, ebook, podcast, video or friend) with that exact information.

  • Do you have a link handy?

By clicking the link, they’ve taken the first step to signing up, but this is where it gets tricky.

Instead of making your new friends jump through a lot of hoops, let’s make it as easy as possible to provide a real, verified email address and their full name - without sending them to a webpage or away from your conversation. (We’ll show you exactly how to do that in a bit.)

How do you reduce the bogus email addresses?

We use a technique that is a bit cumbersome and unconventional. We never give the prospect the gift except by email.

But that requires a lot of infrastructure. And you have to be prepared to answer a lot of questions in the support desk about why they didn’t get the thing they signed up for.

There’s another way to get direct access to the verified email address and full names without requiring them to input that into a form and going through the entire cumbersome process we mentioned earlier. And we’ll talk about that tool in a minute.

But next, you need to focus on creating a GOOD list, a responsive list because that’s where the money is.

Step 3: What’s your list worth?

JeffBezosOnIPhoneJust to prove my point about the value of your list, we’re going to talk about the richest man in the world for a minute. Of course, you may be thinking, “How can I relate to Jeff Bezos who has been the reigning Richest Man in the World since 2017 with a net worth 187 billion?”

Amazon was on the ropes and the brink of bankruptcy in 2004 when Bezos had the idea to create an exclusive membership (against everyone else’s advice) and that became Amazon Prime.

That membership created a mountain of cash, 100 million members (on his LIST) loyal to Amazon, and a base business that would be worth more than $10 billion if it were broken out separately.

His list - Amazon Prime - is worth a lot of money.

Bezos gambled and it paid off.

More importantly, he understood the value of his list.

If you have a list, business revenue is predictable.

I’d like to introduce you to Joe and Jane. Joe has a list already and Jane is just building hers. Both of them would love to have a more predictable income.

young manMeet Joe

Joe knows that each of his 1000 customers spend about $100 each year. And he knows that from past history. That’s why our numbers are so important.

So, his current predictable revenue is: 1000 x 100 = $100,000 annually

But Joe has a goal. He wants to double his revenue.

And because he has sales history, we now know the simplest way to do it is to double his customer list to 2000. Of course, there are other ways to do it like raising prices, selling more volume, but the SIMPLEST method is to increase your list.

young womanMeet Jane

She’s just starting her list building efforts. She doesn’t know the value of your subscribers yet. She hasn’t sold them anything. So, what’s her number?

Whatever she wants it to be. Based on industry averages, she can guess fairly accurately what her customer value should be. Just make it up.

Really! That doesn’t seem very scientific at all, but the truth is she has to start somewhere. So, pick a number. Fortunately, that’s fairly simple too. Most folks say that a good rule of thumb in the information business is $1 per subscriber per month.

Now, how much money does she want to make in a year?

Since she’s just starting out with no list, no product and no capital, we’ll ease into it with $25 thousand for the first year. Now, we can begin to plan. We start with simple math.

$25,000 / $12 = 2083

To earn 25k in the first full year with each subscriber earning about $12 per year, she’ll need 2083 people on her list.

That’s almost 174 new subscribers per month or almost 6 subscribers per day.

Do you believe that’s doable? Of course it is.

Leverage the right tools to make list building simple, easy and inexpensive. The key in the beginning is to avoid complex infrastructure, high-priced advertising or bad data collection.

(We’re going to talk about a tool to help with that a little later.)

Step 4: Is traffic the answer to all your problems?

Yes, list building and traffic to your site are two links in the business chain that have to be connected. Business will not survive without either. And it doesn’t matter what the size of your business is.

McDonaldsMcDonald’s focuses on traffic first, not hamburgers. And they don’t build a store if there’s little traffic or no easy access. Their goal is to have the drive thru stacked with cars at every franchise. If the drive thru is idle, the store is not making any money.

Each customer pulling up to the drive thru window gets in and out fast, predictably and conveniently. And they get exactly what they expect.

Placing an order at McDonald’s is EXACTLY the same selling process that you’re using on your website. Prospects pull up to your window (get your lead magnet), place an order (move through your funnel) and become a customer.

When building your list, it’s not enough to have a great lead magnet. You must also put it in front of the right traffic. You want to make sure your drive thru window always is busy, never idle.

The more prospects getting your lead magnet 24/7, the more money you’ll make as you sign up new leads.

Your goal now is to get your prospects “in and out fast, predictably and conveniently” and give them exactly what they expect.

Don’t make signing up difficult.

LeadPal-Box-500pxIt’s probably time I tell you about this tool called LeadPal.

This new software makes signing up for your lead magnets incredibly simple. By clicking the link, getting your lead magnet, become a simple one-click approval that transfers the prospect’s verified email address and full name to your autoresponder using the social network’s native API - that’s a communication / integration software built by the networks for this exact purpose.

It’s deceptively simple.

Check out LeadPal here.

Step 5: Make list building dead simple!

If you’ve hung in here this long, you’ve noticed we’ve revealed some key list building elements:

  • Building the right list building mindset and setting goals
  • Filling the pipeline with multiple lead magnets driving confirmed email addresses
  • Understanding the sales value of each prospect
  • Focusing on targeted traffic to get as many prospects as possible

Now, let’s bring this 5-step process to a close with a little extra secret sauce.

Optimize your prospect-to-buyer funnel.

Prospects are great. And we want as many as possible, but the sooner they become buyers, the faster you build a real business relationship with them turning them into repeat buyers with a higher customer value.

The good news is that this is an automated process if you think it through and build it the right way. The key, of course, is getting prospects in the front door.

Remember, in Step 1, we talked about taking our list of 7000 to 50,000 - twice!

What I’ve taught you in the first 4 steps is EXACTLY how we did it. We got focused on two things:

  • Driving as much traffic as possible to fill our pipeline so that we got our lead magnets in front of as many people as possible.
  • Converting them from prospects to buyers in about 30-seconds.

We started with the standard optin funnel. It’s tried and true and we still use it a lot.

It looks like this:

OptinFunnel
  • Step 1: The optin offer page (input information required)
  • Step 2: Confirmation (approval) page
  • Step 3: Confirm email sent to inbox
  • Step 4: Deliver the optin gift download
  • Step 5: Confirmation page is really the Upsell page
  • Step 6: Sell a product
  • Step 7: Back to the optin gift download page

That’s a lot of infrastructure, but it works. And it’s been taught this way since long before I got into online marketing in 2005. But now there’s an easier way.

LeadPal-Funnel

Using LeadPal, we can knock the process down to 2 or 3 steps.

  • Step 1: The social media post link
  • Step 2: Approve the app ONE TIME
  • Step 3: Go to the confirmation page to sell the product

First thing you’ll notice is that the prospect is not asked to input their information in a form.

And since the information being shared is the email address and full name they used to register the social media account, it’s verified with their best email address one time (solving your step 2 list building problems by eliminating bogus email addresses and driving a flood of optins simply.)

One time. They never see the approval app again. The process is even more simple after the first time. Give them a gift; show them a sales page.

LeadPal-Funnel-2times

So now, every time you post with a LeadPal link to a blog post, ebook, video, pdf, podcast or any other piece of content, you can send the link to them via email and put the subscriber on any page of your choice.

That’s getting to the cash fast, as one of my mentors used to say. I love it.

Truly, it doesn’t get much simpler than this.

And using LeadPal to drive sales after the optin is the next logical step. It doesn’t matter whether it’s your product or an affiliate product.

  • Dead simple list building
  • Simple sales after the optin
  • Affiliate marketing solution
  • Flood of traffic from social media
  • Easy setup

I just can’t say enough about LeadPal.

Check it out here.

And because we believe in this so much, if you sign up for LeadPal, we’ll send you to our special training walking through the entire process (which is very simple) and demonstrating  additional ways you can use LeadPal to drive faster optins to your list AND make more money.

I know what you're thinking: How is this legal?

It uses the approved APIs provided by the social media companies - 8 of them right now with more to come - to access the data feeds. It's legit because the prospect clicks "Approve" using the platform’s native API built exactly for that purpose.

Then, the magic happens.

What does this mean for you?

First, list building on social media just got dead simple.

Second, you don't need a ton of web pages to do this. This tool allows you to bypass the traditional landing page (squeeze page or opt-in page - whatever you want to call it) and capture the lead directly from the social platform.

Third, a fast easy way to use ALL of the content you’ve got on your hard drive.

I know you’ve got it. Videos, reports, checklists, and tons more all about 80% complete. Just waiting on you to build a funnel.

And when you double your current list or build your first subscriber list, you’re in the game. The Numbers Game. Leadpal helps you get control over easy list growth which translates to income.

Don’t miss this.

The key to profitable content creation is to create it specifically for your niche audience. Knowing your target niche is vital if your content efforts are to reach the right people. If you don’t have a client avatar, you should take the time to create one. Otherwise, your efforts will be ineffective.

The following tips will help keep you on the right path to creating quality content that your audience will crave and consume.

Select a Topic

Not sure what to write about? Ask your readers! You can do this by creating a quick survey or poll or by asking for feedback on your blog, or in your emails.

Topic Research

Always research your topic and ensure that you are quoting current facts and information. It’s good practice to add a link back to the source stats and references used in your content.

Create the Content on a Consistent Basis

Develop a plan that includes building in the time to research and write your content.

Publish Content to Your Blog Consistently

There is nothing worse than developing a good readership and then stop publishing to your blog. Your readers will disappear, and you are not helping to build a brand or develop a good relationship with potential customers. Avoid this mistake by creating a simple editorial schedule that will keep you on track of creating new content. If you need help monetizing your blog, check out this course here.

Pay Attention to Your Traffic Stats

Understanding the source of the traffic and the type of content that makes an impact or gets lots of comments.

Eye-Grabbing Content

If you are writing content for your blog, including images, use bullet points, lists, and leave lots of white space. Your goal is to make your content easy to read, engaging, and visually appealing. If you need help creating graphics, this is one of our favorite tools to create tons of images, including social media images (automatically sized correctly!)

Share Content

Share Your Content Everywhere

Remember to share your new content across your social media sites. Publish the link to Facebook, Tweet about it, and Pin any images. For over 2 years we've been using PostBlazer to do our Facebook and Twitter posting. We love it and you can check it out this quick overview and demo here.

Use Videos

Don't overlook videos as a content creation method. People love to watch rather than read sometimes, so give them what they want. Many marketers will offer a video blog post in addition to the written one. I know what you're thinking though. UGHHH I hate making videos. Our friends over at Vidnami (formerly Content Samurai) help you create videos without being on screen and they've already got a gazillion video clips and images so all you need is to just add your copy. We use this tool at least once a day. It's a top-notch tool you'll want to keep in your arsenal forever! And you can try it for free by clicking here.

Proofread Everything!

Ideally, have someone that did not write the content to proofread it before publishing. Using the Grammarly tool or spell check is highly recommended to help you see errors easily overlooked.

The more you write, the better your work will become. You will find it easier to come up with content ideas and the time it takes to write a completed project will decrease.

Think about repurposing other quality content you have produced in a different format. Check out this blog post.

Use the above writing tips on a regular basis to improve all aspects of your writing. Writing is a skill that can be learned. As your confidence grows the more you write, the better quality your content will be.

Profitable content creation is a win for you and a win for your audience when you are consistently knowing and providing what they need. Stay ahead of what everyone is doing in that niche. Become their go-to person for information.

Explainer Videos Do Generate More Sales and Conversions

By David Perdew 2 Comments

Explainer Videos Do Generate More Sales and Conversions

8 seconds! That's all you get, and then I'm gone.

Back in 2015, Microsoft released a study that said the average human attention span was now just 8 seconds. At 9 seconds, the goldfish (Time Magazine said) has a one-second edge on us.

If you don’t get the viewer’s attention in less than 8 seconds, you can forget it. Your message is never going to get through.

That average time still holds true today based on reporting from Oracle and Digital Information World.

Businesswoman working with eight hands, representing to very busy business concept.

In another study, research by the National Centre for Biotechnology Information and the National Library of Medicine in the US found 79 percent of respondents regularly "dual screen" by using portable devices while watching TV.

Not only are competing for the 8 seconds on a single screen but now we’re competing to be better than other content on 2 additional screens at the same time.

What’s a marketer to do?

Never has it been more important to create content that engages your audience. We’re here to help.

Creating videos makes folks nervous though. In this post, we're talking about the core components your videos must have and you can quickly create those using explainer style videos so you don't have to be live on screen. If you're really comfortable live, then go for it. Live is best.

Explainer videos work though and can really help you get your videos out there while you practice getting more comfortable on screen. Let's dig into the structure all of your videos must have.

Follow these 7 steps to make sure your audience not only consumes your content but stays with you until the call-to-action. (You do have a CTA for each piece of content, right?)

    • Some folks just aren’t that into you. And it’s not all bad. Knowing who will not be drawn to your content is the first step to finding those that will. And those that want your information will already be disposed to give you more than 8 seconds of their precious time. You’ve got to go where they are. That involves research. And research is work. But if you want a responsive audience, not just one that gives you a little more than 8 seconds, find out who they are and what they want. The folks at CMSWire.com remind us, “… it stands to reason that if your brand doesn’t have a proactive presence on the channels your customers are using, chances are your customer will find another one that does.” By focusing on the market that is interested in your service, you’ve taken the first step to be relevant.
    • Don’t be fooled by “good” numbers. We talk about analytics all the time and the power of numbers. At NAMS, Inc. we LOVE numbers. We track: Opens, Clicks, Likes, Shares, Bounce Rates, Time on Page, and many others…But all of those things help us improve one number: Simply put, how many people took the action we wanted them to take? At the end of the day, if our content helps us improve conversions, we’ve had a good day. But if we increase any other number, and conversions remain flat—it’s back to the drawing board. We have to guard against feeling excited by misleading statistics.
    • Grab ‘em by the throat. Your premise may be dull as dirt, but your subject line has to be as exciting as sex on the beach under the moonlight. That’s why the clickbait advertising is all the rage on the big authority sites. With one good headline, people will click away from very well-written and very thoughtful articles to “Discover the Ancient Secrets of King Tut that Will Change the Way Your Wife Looks at YOU!” even though we have no idea who King Tut is or how ancient he is. When I was in the newspaper business, I was the founding editor of one of the news magazines. We spent hours coming up with great headlines—occasionally before we had the story to go with it…
    • Keep the story moving. We don’t sit through movies any longer if the story doesn’t move quickly. The cuts have to be fast, and the action intense. Thank you, MTV. Think about the last fiction book you read. I’d be willing to bet that if you weren’t dropped into some intense action in the first 10 pages, it was “buh, bye!” for that book. Last year, I finished a 17-book detective mystery series because the action was intense and the characters so likable. Seventeen books! I was/am a raving fan of the series. And now, I can’t wait for the next one to come out. . We get attached to great stories that move fast. Make sure yours does too.
    • Don’t make me read! Yes, I know. We all need to read more. But we’re not. Consumers love watching videos.” In fact, in a recent survey by Promo.com, they found 49 percent of people watch more than five videos per day. ... By 2022, online videos will make up more than 82% of all consumer internet traffic — 15 times higher than it was in 2017. — (Cisco)
    • Shorter is better. Nobody is going to watch a 60-minute video any longer. Not a promotional video anyway. The average video watch time on Facebook as of 2020 is 10 seconds. Save your longer videos (less than 10 minutes though) for your targeted traffic. You need to catch their attention with short videos, then use the longer videos to education, build a relationship, and sell.

We're not talking about webinars here. Just promotional style content.

  • Use the tools. Creating content has never been simpler. New tools are coming out all the time. The prices are dropping and the drag-n-drop functionality is more amazing.

For example, take a look at the video I created here using a little tool called Doodly  Right now, the price is fantastic and well worth it.

I used this explainer video for a product launch a few years ago and we still make sales on our product regularly. The video (which I created with Doodly in just a couple of hours) uses all seven of these steps we've talked about above. But there’s one thing that my wife said when she watched the 2-minute video that really stuck out.

“Wow, you have to watch that because the images that move through quickly keep you so engaged.”

Boom! That’s what we want.

Turn YOUR 8 seconds into more than 2 minutes of engaging video with a strong call-to-action.

5 Myths of Affiliate Marketing | Affiliate Marketing For Beginners

By David Perdew 6 Comments

The Truth About These 5 Affiliate Marketing Myths

With so many misconceptions about affiliate marketing, business people of all types are missing the gold...

Bad information keeps many people from making money online.

People give a half-hearted effort to one form of marketing, get disappointed that it didn’t work, and then cry out to the world that it no longer works…

How many times have you seen one of these headlines:

“Email Marketing Is Dead!”

“SEO No Longer Works Thanks to Google…”

“Content Marketing Has Lost Its Luster…”

Or the big one:

“Affiliate Marketing Is For Scammers!”

When something is proclaimed dead or not working any longer, it’s probably because someone was gaming the system and the system owners plugged the hole.

Ethical marketing always works in the long run.

That’s why Affiliate Marketing has worked for decades and will continue to work for the non-scammers of the world.

Beginners CAN learn Affiliate Marketing!

But the headlines persist, and the myths and misconceptions flourish.

Let’s talk about the top 5 affiliate marketing myths today...

1) Affiliate Marketing for Beginners Is Easy...

There's a misconception out there that the newbie online marketer can grab an affiliate link, put it on their Facebook page, and the money will start rolling in.

Not so fast...

Affiliate marketing like any other business model IS a business.

And it has to be treated like a business.

While affiliate marketing may be the exact business model you need as a new entrepreneur, it's important to understand and accept that it is NOT a get-rich-quick scheme. Can you earn money with affiliate marketing though? Definitely.

As with any business, your primary job is to present a solution to a market with a desperate problem. The problem must be so severe that they are willing to pay for that solution quickly.

Is this beginning to sound like work yet? It should.

Affiliate marketing can be VERY rewarding, but it is not easy, especially if you have no business experience. But affiliate marketing can the be best way to learn how to build a business with very low-risk.

Your investment as an affiliate marketer is low because you don't have any product or delivery costs. Your focus has to be on building a market, knowing that market inside out, and learning how to sell.

These are essential skills for any business owner to master.

Driving traffic and measuring conversions to build your marketing list is the primary tool of every affiliate marketer.

2) Affiliate marketing doesn't work anymore...

The days of throwing a link up on the social marketing sites and making a million dollars overnight are gone...if they ever existed.

Social media has heightened the importance of building relationships with your target market, and that can be a slow process.

Your followers and email subscribers must feel a connection with you. If they don't, they'll find real connections elsewhere.

Affiliate marketing not only works with an audience that knows, likes, and trusts you, but they will actually ask for your affiliate link for new products. Sometimes, they feel such a close relationship that they’ll pass around your affiliate link for you.

Affiliate marketing without real relationships (even if they’re automated) is hard but can be done with a lot of effort.

But affiliate marketing with real connections with an audience that has been nurtured and embraced works like a charm because you’re genuinely looking out for their interests.

3) The competition is too steep in affiliate marketing...

First, let’s agree competition is good.

That means there's a market for the product. If not, no one else would be trying to sell that product.

Competitors can also become your best traffic source. Using the right tools like iSpionage.com, you can target your competitors, and step in front of their traffic with better offers, Facebook ads, or other techniques.

Sound a little cutthroat?

Nope, it's just business. Once you become the Big Dog, everyone will target you too.

Your job is to offer better bonuses, better services, better support, and better experience to that market. And by doing that, you’re building a better relationship.

Find out how your competitors are building their audience (using keyword research) and jump in there to grab that audience yourself.

Business is about competition, so if that bothers you, you probably need to get a job.

4) The more I promote my affiliate links the more money I'll make...

Listen, this one is tricky.

In theory, this is true. But there are other considerations like...

Does your message match the right audience? This is where you've got to get really good at knowing your market including their hopes, dreams, and issues.

In the consulting world, they call these the FUDs - Fears, Uncertainties, and Doubts.

What is your audience trying to do? And how can the solution you put in front of them solve that issue?

Promote to the right audience and you don't have to "sell them" often because you actually become part of their go-to-problem-solver while you're building a relationship.

Spamming your links to an audience never works.

But offering a solution to a problem always works.

5) Affiliate marketing is high risk and low ROI...

Ok. There is risk in any business endeavor. In affiliate marketing, you could make a lot of sales for a product only to have the product owner go out of business.

That's always a risk.

And the return on investment could be very low, but only because you’re not making sales.

That usually means you don’t have the right message for the right target market. Conversions are much easier and ROI much higher when you're presenting the right solution to audience's problem. Then, they become  customers fast.

Opponents of affiliate marketing will jump in here and declare you'd be better off building your own products, selling them online, and keeping ALL the money.

If you can't sell someone else's product and get a good ROI, what makes you think that you could invest a lot of money on your own product and sell THAT to the same target market.

Affiliate marketing is awesome because the risk is extremely low. You don't have to create a massive infrastructure to support your products. You're letting someone else take that risk on.

And the low ROI? Wrong.

Affiliate marketing can make you money...

The potential in affiliate marketing for those people who learn how to build an audience and convert that audience to paying customers is HUGE because it’s a pay-for-performance model!

The more you convert, the more you make, and the higher your return.

Of course, like everything else, affiliate marketing only works if you know how to do it correctly.

Now that we've debunked these 5 myths of affiliate marketing, let's tackle a couple big questions you might be asking yourself.

Is affiliate marketing for beginners a viable option?

Absolutely. My first real money online was a result of promoting someone else's ebook on Clickbank as an affiliate. In one weekend, I made over $750 and thought I died and gone to heaven.

It was the easiest money I'd ever made I thought. Send an email. Get cash. What's so hard about that?

Building the list that I sent the affiliate link to took a couple of months. My initial investment in that 650 person list was about $600 for a classified ad in an online magazine. So, it wasn't free, but it was fast.

And I communicated with the subscribers on that list almost everyday to build a good relationship. When I sent the email touting the ebook I'd been using to build my own first product, they snapped it up in droves.

I had identified the right problem with the right audience and presented a good solution with my own proof and experience.

Frankly, I did everything right - completely by accident because I was brand new to online marketing and sales.

But I was hooked.

The next task was to find out where to learn affiliate marketing correctly.

I hooked up with a mentor who called his email list his personal ATM machine. When he needed a new tractor for his horse farm, he sent an email to his massive list of subscribers and generated fast cash.

After seeing those examples, I didn't need to ask, "Why start an affiliate marketing business?" The evidence was named John Deere.

From that point forward, I knew that affiliate marketing was always going to be a part of my business. And it has remained about 50 percent of the NAMS business consistently over the years.

It's a great technique for revenue diversification as well as a win-win-win for me, my customers who need solutions we don't provide, and the vendor who needs sellers.

So, are you interested in affiliate marketing? How to start might be your next question.

I can help with that. I've got a solid reputation when it comes to affiliate marketing. I get about 10 requests per Endless Affiiate Profitsday to promote other people's products. But I'm very, very picky.

Awhile back, a few of my members asked me if I'd ever written down all of my strategies or if I had a checklist I could pass around.

Well, my one-page checklist turned into a massive set of easy to implement step by step instructions on how to get started with affiliate marketing, how to scale your affiliate income stream, and then how to implement more advanced techniques as you make more money.
